PARENT-CHILD PEDOPHILIC RELATIONS
In the first chapter we explained how the Kinsey research indicated that I% of the female population in this country over the age of 14 had experienced at least one sexual contact with their own fathers in childhood. While only a small percentage of these approximately 650,000 girls had gone through a full coital relation with their fathers, many had engaged in fellatio or cunnilingus, mutual masturbation and various other deviations.
Mother-son relations are far less frequent and overt, due to the more passive nature of the female libido. But they do occur, and there are many documented cases on record. The reason more do not come to the attention of police and mental health authorities is that they are seldom reported. The female who is accosted by her father has all of society as well as her mother behind her. The father and boy who would report that the mother had been intimate with the son might find themselves in the same embarrassing position as the husky Marine who complained to police that he was raped by three beautiful girls.
In doing psychological research we come across a multitude of cases involving homosexual relations between fathers and sons, mothers and daughters. But in comparing them to overall statistics, the number of instances is small indeed.
Except in cases where a small child satisfies a natural curiosity or innocent sexuality by examining a parent's genitalia or other erogenous zone, all other forms of parent-child incestuous relations are of a seriously neurotic or psychotic nature, and criminal as well.
The parent who originates a sexual act with his or her own child is certainly not normal. And the child past the age of reason with average moral orientation who promotes a sexual contact with the mother or father is obviously motivated by abnormal impulses.
Therefore, while many overt acts of brother-sister or other sibling incest may be passed off as a part of growing up or child's play, we are dealing here with far more potent and deviate forces.
The middle-aged father who seduces or coerces his budding teenage daughter into intercourse often offers excuses almost identical to those of the forceful rapist. He blames the daughter for provoking his lust by teasing him, running around in front of him scantily clad, leaving her bedroom door open so he can glimpse her attractive nakedness, slipping her tongue into his mouth while kissing him, or pressing her young curves too tightly against his body.
The truth of the matter is that highly sexed teenage girls do often conduct themselves this way toward their fathers, sometimes deliberately, at other times with subconscious motivation. But no responsible father can offer this as a valid excuse. He is the responsible adult and parent, and like the forceful rapist he must bear the main burden of guilt, although the daughter may have to share a small part of it.
And this very emotional disturbance that prompts a daughter's aggressiveness is often a product of the father's insistence that she dress in the most revealing styles. She is impressed with the idea that her father obviously wants to see her as near nude as possible because of this overt reaction to her when so dressed.
Ofttimes we find that the daughter, with the well-meaning help of both parents, is made over in the image of the mother. The father sees in her a beautiful and desirable 14 to 17-year-old version of his own wife, and everything pleasing about her that attracted him to her so many years before. Trapped at a precarious phase of middle-age, he may desperately look to his own daughter as a way to recapture the magic of his youth.
Mother-son relations are rarely evoked by the boy. They often begin very early in fife when the child is still an infant, and the mother rubs or masturbates his little penis for one of three reasons: I.) She may think it is "cute" or "amusing" to watch the small organ tumesce and detumesce to her hand play. 2.) She may use it as a means to quiet a crying or restless child, a way to make him relax and go to sleep. 3.) She may do it as a deliberate sensual act, gaining sexual enjoyment from the feel of the erection between her fingers, and sharing the contented and affectionate bond it creates between them. In these latter cases, mothers have also been known to fellate their own sons in inimagine and beyond.
When these boys become older, it is only natural that they continue to seek out their mothers as sexual objects, unless they completely repress the feeling because of moral teachings. We have heard of several instances in impoverished families, for instance, where mothers had coital intercourse regularly with their sons from about age eight or nine. And the erotic interest had almost always begun with the mother's early fondling of the genitalia.
Although the incidents are proportionately low in number, we find that many parent-child cases of incest involving mother-son and father-daughter develop after the child has reached the age of consent, usually 18 to 21, and where the blame often lies as much with the son or daughter as it does with the parent. But these cases, as well as those relations continuing into adulthood, will be studied in a later chapter.
Homosexual parent-child incest, while rare, is far from uncommon as incest goes. The child is usually closer to the parent of the same sex, particularly where nudity and other "secrets" are shared in the pre-teens. It is also the parent of the same sex who has the job of telling the child the facts of life.
If a mother or father is homosexually oriented, the temptations and opportunities are therefore many times what they are with a child of the opposite sex. By word and action of the most subtle nature, for instance, a parent may "indoctrinate" the child toward at least a tolerance of homosexuality, if not outright approval and interest in the phenomenon.
Youngsters in their formative years are particularly vulnerable to these approaches, usually identifying with, adoring and looking up to the parent of the same sex, and desiring to be as much like him or her as possible.
Since psychiatric, medical and psychological research is so abundantly rich in material on parent-child incest, we have been able to carefully select the following case histories from a variety of reliable sources, as well as from our own sexological practice.
Case History (ll):
FRIGIDITY IN THE ADULT FEMALE RESULTING FROM PATERNAL INCEST IN CHILDHOOD
Mrs. Gladys R., a sensually pretty and well-dressed married woman of 28 sought professional help because of severe depression over being unable to achieve orgasm in her marital relations. Several physicians had examined her and reported that there was no organic reason why she should not achieve enjoyment and satisfaction from coitus.
Questioning revealed that Gladys came from a family of five children where her father ruled the household in a tyrannical manner. The children were often punished severely for minor things and the mother was sometimes beaten by the father. He was not a drinking man, but flew into frequent rages and was known as a philanderer whose girlfriends were often quite young.
The patient reported that two sisters and one brother had been under psychiatric care before and manifested the same traits of quick temper and rage as the father.
A study of Gladys' medical history revealed that she had undergone an abortion at age 14. During her first session she passed quickly over this point and readily admitted to several incidents in her childhood. When she was six years old, a teenage boy had rubbed her thighs and inserted his fingers under the crotch Of her panties. When she learned about sex at age 7, Gladys indulged in daydreams of what it would be like to see her parents in naked intercourse.
She also recalled that it was about this same time that she first became aware of her father's overt display of his penis, often partially erected. This admittedly fascinated her because it seemed so large in comparison to her young brothers'. The father sometimes left the bathroom door open while urinating, or would "forget" to zip his fly and sit in such a manner that his penis was exposed.
Sex play with other girls up to age 10 or ll consisted of nothing more than playing "Doctor." They would take down their panties and examine digitally each other's hairless vulvas. She denied that it produced any pleasure.
The first conscious awakening, the initial pleasure realization, came to Gladys when she was about 12 or 13. A strange man whom she thought to be the father of a girlfriend, offered to give her a ride home from the movies one evening. As they drove along, he put his hand on her bare thighs.
She attributed the fact that she let him show her how to masturbate to his glib talk and persuasive charm, although she regarded him as "crazy." Afterwards, however, she began to masturbate when alone.
Probed further about the abortion she went through at 14, Gladys finally blurted out the whole story in the following manner:
"I've never told my husband about this ... never! My father ... my own father made me pregnant. I didn't enjoy it. I kept myself back ... wouldn't let myself go when he did it.
"It had been building up for a long time. Daddy was always out of work and hanging around the house. Whenever we were alone, he would make me sit in his lap and he pulled up my dress and played with me ... my sex organs. I didn't like it, but I was so afraid to hurt mother by telling her. I loved him too. I liked affection, but I knew this was so wrong.
"One afternoon when we were alone, he took down my panties and had me lay on the bed. He took out his penis and said he just wanted to put it on the outside. You know, rub it around in my pubic hairs. I let him. I really had no way to resist.
"He broke his promise ... and I screamed, it hurt so much! I don't think he did it more than five seconds before he had his climax. He left the room and I wiped myself. There wasn't much blood because I think I lost my virginity when I masturbated with a candle once.
"I began to get sick and vomit in the mornings. At the end of three months my stomach was swelling and I knew I was pregnant. My father ignored my pleas, so I went to mother and told her the whole story. She forgave me and she knew Daddy was sick. It took all her savings for me to have the abortion.
"I've had terrible nightmares ever since nightmares about being chased by all sorts of miserable men.
"When I got married I thought it would all be over, that I could have sex and enjoy it like everyone else. No ... it didn't happen. I'm dead ... there's no feeling down there and it's driving me crazy! My husband so loves to have intercourse. He loves my body and praises it all the time. But he has to use lubricant every time we have intercourse. He gets so passionate and has such long beautiful climaxes.
"And I just lay there. I feel nothing..."
PSYCHOLOGICAL COMMENT: A close study of the patient's dreams coupled with all the other factors in this case brought on the conclusion that her complete frigidity was a direct consequence of the "paternal rape trauma" she went through at 14. Her husband even had much the same appearance as the father, right down to a mouthful of tobacco stained teeth that she was forced to look at and feel at her lips and breasts during each marital act of intercourse.
Every time sex was accomplished with her husband, Gladys relived the traumatic experience with her father. In a way, she was deliberately punishing herself for having let the "rape" take place. She had allowed her father to "play with" her sex parts over some period of time before coitus took place.
A combination of intense hate toward her father or the father-image her husband represented, and a sense of guilt or self-hatred because of the incestuous experience she possibly could have prevented, made it impossible for her to enjoy coitus or reach orgasm in relations with her husband.
This case pretty well typifies the majority of those in which the father aggressively pursues his own daughter. Of course, each situation is individual in many respects. But the father is ordinarily the dominant force in the household, though emotionally unstable and given to tyranny. The mother is usually passive and forgiving.
We notice here particularly that Gladys' guilt-feelings resulted from the fact that she placed much of the blame on herself. She could have prevented it if she had resisted his initial advances and told her mother. Yet how hard-put a child is to break down the otherwise cohesive and often loving framework of the family, even one with a tyrannical father.
The sense of guilt Gladys suffered may well have been from the fact that her own highly sexed body (recall her frequent masturbation and earlier experiences) urgently desired to experiment with coitus, the practice that she probably assumed brought the absolute zenith of pleasure.
We seriously doubt that Gladys deliberately teased or provoked her father, except by her submissiveness. In the few cases where a sexually precocious daughter may, in effect, seduce her father, the end result usually goes one of two ways. She either falls desperately in love with him and has great difficulty in overcoming it by herself, or she becomes a hardened and callous man-hater, often a Lesbian or prostitute.
Case History (12):
CARNAL KNOWLEDGE, COITUS AND COMMERCIAL SEX EXPLOITATION
BY A FATHER OF HIS 12 AND 14-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTERS
Just a few years ago, Federal agents and local police in a heavily populated three-state area cracked one of the most depraved pornography operations ever to be discovered in this country. Along with it, a 40-year-old father was charged with the most contemptible acts of incest imaginable with his two young daughters. Police officials say that the father admitted most of the sexual atrocities with which he was charged, but denied that he did it for money.
Officials were first alerted when a distraught 16-year-old youth, accompanied by his older sister and her husband, walked into a suburban police station in one of the largest metropolitan areas of the U.S. to seek help. Referred to the juvenile bureau, the trio shocked hardened veterans of the police force by showing them a set of photographs.
The pictures were of the youth's 14-year-old blonde girlfriend. They showed her completely naked and in some of the most obscene poses imaginable with three large naked Negro men in their middle thirties. And there were others too: With a pleasant smile on her attractive face, the young teenager was shown applying a vibrator to her genitalia, the shapely legs spread wide apart. Another depicted her using a hot dog with which to masturbate. There was one of her using a dildo (an artificial penis) covered with a "French tickler." 64
And many more.
Veteran members of the vice squad were called in to view the evidence and listen to the youth's testimony. He explained that Rita (a pseudonym for his girlfriend) had broken down and told him the whole story of how her father had been having intercourse and other sex relations with her since she was 12, and had transported her to three other states to pose for depraved obscene photographs, alone and with others.
But it was not for herself that Rita was concerned. It was not for her own sake that she turned over the photographs to her boyfriend and begged him to help her. The father, a skilled laborer who was separated from his wife and had custody of the children, had also begun having relations with Rita's barely 12-year-old sister, and was thinking of subjecting her to the same kind of group debauchment.
When Federal authorities were brought into the case, it was learned that the father had been convicted only two years earlier for interstate traffic in obscene materials that apparently did not involve his young daughters.
By the time both the State's attorney and Federal prosecutors had handed down almost a dozen indictments against five people, including the father, the following facts had been uncovered, according to authorities:
I.) Rita's father had taken her on numerous occasions to the apartment of a brilliant college student who worked part-time as a driver in a city over two hundred miles away. This man, also indicted, had a camera and sound recording equipment in both his bedroom and bathroom. In this manner, the cute blonde junior high school girl could be photographed going to the toilet and taking a bath, as well as in a multitude of sex acts on the bed with the student or father, the two men taking turns operating the cameras and audio equipment. The college student was known to police as a man who had a most bizarre and unusual sex mania for performing all kinds of deviant acts upon little girls.
2.) Rita was also taken to the rural area of a nearby state by her father, where still photographs were made of her in different sexual connections and postures with a variety of obscene implements of sexual excitation. This was alleged to be the headquarters of a nation-wide pornographic photo ring that was willing to pay a steep price for very young girls. The father was said to be training his 12-year-old for this, with a promise of even more money than he received for Rita's services.
3.) With her father acting as "director" and photographer, Rita was taken to the apartment of a clerk in another large city, where she was photographed in naked intercourse and several perverted sexual acts with the three Negro men. It was these pictures she gave to her boyfriend, asking him to show them to the authorities.
Further investigation by police and medical authorities revealed that in addition to the father's previous conviction on trafficking in pornography, he had a long history involving sexual deviations.
One report read: "Shortly after World War II while he was stationed as a soldier in Japan, the man's wife went to authorities here in the U.S. to show her concern over the letters he was sending her. In these sexually explosive missives the husband set out in detail that he wanted his wife to go to bed with as many men as possible while he was away, and to have as many different types of sex acts with them as she could devise. Furthermore, he requested that she write to him after each session and describe what had happened in the most basic terms.
"At the same time, the woman's husband went on, he would have as many liaisons as possible with Japanese girls and write to her about them. He then proceeded to tell of several girls with whom he had been practicing normal oral, anal, auxiliary, and other types of relations. These practices he set out in vivid detail using language that could compete with the most hard-core pornography."
The father was eventually convicted on allied charges after police found 50 to 75 photographs of Rita in lewd poses at his home, along with photographic processing and camera equipment. Rita, a slim and attractive blonde with a good figure, and her 12-year-old sister, were treated at a state mental institution for some time and released to the custody of responsible relatives. Others involved in this most unusual case were indicted on various charges reflecting the degree of their alleged guilt.
PSYCHOLOGICAL COMMENT: We have seldom seen a case where a father was so incestuously obsessed with his daughters. It was not enough for this man to be having sex relations with them himself whenever he pleased, he had to be an active participant to their complete debauchment at the hand of others.
He watched, like a lustful voyeur, while Rita's pubescent body was violated time and again by the most depraved of individuals. He acted as cameraman to record these sexual nightmares on film, developed it himself, and kept a voluminous file of the prints.
Although he denied making a profit from his evil deeds, and his income as a highly skilled craftsman seemed more than adequate to support three people, it is still believed by many that there was a strong commercial motive involved also. Yet this pales at the side of the incestuous manifestations.
One of the most difficult things for the average reader to conceive will be the attitude of the two daughters. By day, they were both apparently average or better school children, in the proper grades for their ages, and considered relatively normal by today's hectic standards. Yet by night, and on weekends and vacations, they participated in a life as sordid and sex-filled as that of the most jaded prostitute or Pigalle "circus girl."
Why did they do it? Why did they not run to the police at the first indication that their father wanted their bodies as sexual playthings for his own twisted use and abuse? Why did Rita submit to every vile act her profligate father could devise over a period of two years before finally seeking help?
The answers are not easy to come by unless we can try to put ourselves in her own peculiar situation. Deserted by their mother, these girls had but one place to find security and the base for life every child needs just as sure as he needs food to eat and water to drink. The father was their only, link to life.
Since the earliest age, sex morality was almost unknown to Rita and her sister. They knew that the things which went on under their own roof were not to be talked about outside the home, but they were not sure exactly why. Their own corrupted and unoriented psyches doubtless craved a strange fulfillment too. They had learned from a tender age that genital activity brought sexual pleasure to them. They had been trained to accept incest by the only provider and authoritarian image they knew.
But even a child indoctrinated into such a bizarre way of life cannot forever escape the fact of its evil, its almost total condemnation by society. Rita was the first to recognize this and decided to do something positive. Afraid of taking direct action herself to save her sister from the orgiastic obscenity to which she had been subjected, she confided in her boyfriend.
One cannot help but strongly admire this poor child for summoning the courage to do what she did. At the risk of being condemned and cast aside by the one person she must have had something like a real love relationship with, her boyfriend, she told him the whole sordid story of her life, even gave him evidence in the form of photographic proof of her past corruption.
Having realized the depraved abnormality of her forced fife and that the police were the ones who should know about it, she must have also realized that she herself faced institutionalization and ostracism from her community, loss of all friends and possibly even rejection by relatives.
Yet despite these shattering odds, she made the move. And with the courage demonstrated by that single act, there is every reason to believe that with proper psychiatric care and the love of her sister and close relatives, she may eventually become a useful, normal and respectable member of society, along with her sister.
Case History (13):
INCESTUOUS RELATIONS SHORT OF COITUS BY A FATHER WITH ALL THREE OF HIS DAUGHTERS
The man in this case, although a brilliant scholar and talented writer was no less of a degenerate in regard to his daughters than the father in the previous case. This man, whom we shall call Edward, diabolically brainwashed his three daughters from the time they were six years old. He taught them masturbation and insisted that they resort to it whenever they were tense, bored, feeling bad or temperamental. He created one of the strangest sexual bonds between a father and his daughters that we have come up against in this current research.
like Rita's father, Edward was left to take care of his daughters when they were very young. His weird theories and ideas which he espoused with all the charm, wit and logic of the learned man he was, drove his wife to the brink of insanity. She fled the home, constrained from taking her daughters by the powerful influences of her husband, who denied her charges as "ridiculous." Because of his high position he was unquestionably believed by the authorities.
It has only been recently that Edward gave a complete confession of his activities and even wrote a book-length manuscript, a pathetically grotesque yet poignant love story of his sex life with his eldest daughter from the time she was 6 until she reached 18.
Utilizing the most perverted logic, and combining it with elements of witchcraft and sorcery, Edward held on to his private castle of incest for almost 16 years. He reationalized his criminal conduct by taking modem psychological concepts and distorting them in the most macabre ways to fit his crazed sexual appetite.
At first glance, the following excerpt from one of his lesser artistic and literary attempts seems harmless enough by itself.
"LOVE is not a secret, shameful thing to be expressed behind a locked bedroom door.
Hiding is a form of deceitfulness. Openness and frankness are forms of honesty. Hiding builds up barriers and mistrust. Openness and frankness in all these things ensures onesess and happiness within the family.
Children should not be excluded from LOVE, but should be encouraged to share it with all.
Children who grow up in freedom have always a great love and affection for their parents.
Love-play experienced by children during adolescence enables them to obtain release from nervous tension, thereby avoiding delinquency, frustration and moodiness." This was the strange preface to a group of vivid and life-like ink sketches Edward drew of himself and his daughters naked and masturbating each other as well as performing oral intercourse.
Perhaps the strangest thing about his bizarre relations with these three lovely girls, was that he never actually coited with them. They performed mutual masturbation, fellatio and cunnilingus, often in orgiastic group style, but never genital-to-genital intercourse.
Another gruesome exhibit from the voluminous files on this man, consisted of a series of three sketches of his youngest daughter when she was about ll or 12 years old. In the first picture, she is sitting on the floor, dressed, an unhappy frown on her face, one shoe off, the short skirt flopped across her nicely shaped child thighs about midway. In the second picture, a happy smile has replaced the frown, her legs are up, bent at the knees and spread apart. With her left hand, she holds the dress up at her stomach, and with the right hand, she is masturbating her exposed vulva, one finger deeply inserted. The third sketch depicts her completely naked lying at the edge of a small bed, her legs up in the air and spread. Edward is kneeling on the floor in front of her, performing cunnilingus.
The poem that accompanies these graphic sketches provide a valuable insight into the man's fantastically warped thought processes.
Edward's daughter seems so gay
She'll never sit and moan Because he taught her how to play
A game when on her own.
Edward's is a special game You do not lose or win You put your hand between your legs And push your finger in.
First you feel a little funny (Try it once or twice) Put your finger in your cunny (Don't you think it's nice?)
Edward's daughter plays at this And very often begs Her daddy for a great big kiss In between her legs.
This is why she's never bad This is why she's never sad Oh that other small girls had A man like Edward for a dad.
During a series of interviews conducted by a psychological researcher on behalf of this current study, Edward claimed that one of his reasons for instilling this strange sexual love and dependence into his daughters was his own neurotic fear of losing his children when they grew up.
He touches on this in the following excerpts from a long statement he submitted:
"Having masturbated for so long, I have actually come to prefer it to normal intercourse. I taught all three of my daughters to masturbate themselves.
The reason the eldest got married was because she wanted me to have intercourse with her, but of course, I refused. She said, T would rather you did it to me, but if you don't, I'll go out and get a boy to do it.'
"I said that if she was determined, that is what she had better do, and I gave her careful instructions on the use of contraceptives, and a lecture on venereal disease. Whenever she came in, I always questioned her about the way she had sex, and whether she had remembered to use a preventative.
"Her two other sisters regarded her as stupid, and said that boys were unnecessary. I think she regrets getting married now, and talks of leaving him. Naturally, she would come back to me. Even the youngest had to try it out for herself, but I think that she prefers to relieve herself without intercourse. The other one has never shown any interest in boys. I have offered to encourage her to be more than friendly with a woman I believe to have Lesbian tendencies.
"I have never heard of a child who did not find masturbation an enjoyable experience, and it gives them an added feeling of security knowing their parents approve of it.
"I have photographed all my daughters in the nude many times. My eldest daughter, as usual, wanted to go further and become a model outside the home (Author's note: All three girls had exceptionally lovely bodies and attractive faces.) I had no objection because she could have made a paying career for herself, and would have done it if it hadn't been for that stupid, narrow-minded boy
(her husband). He was a greedy pig and wanted her all for his greedy little self.
"But he will never have her completely to himself because the ties between us are too strong for him to break. She is mine, and she will remain mine for as long as I live. I hold her to me with the silver cord of love, and nothing can break that. At ll or 12 the sexual urge begins, and you must have the ability to hold a daughter through that."
Another revealing insight into the mental workings of this most unusual man is contained in one of the first statements he made to our psychological researcher. He attempted to explain his neurotic compulsion to see not only his daughters naked, but all friends and acquaintances of both sexes as well, by saying:
"...there is one thing that makes me ill, and that is any form of hiding. By hiding, I mean concealing anything from me, whether it is your body or some act. This is the reason I have to see my children naked. If I can't, it is as if they were hiding themselves from me under their clothes. I cannot bear one of my daughters bolting herself in her bedroom, or in the bathroom ... That is why I was impelled to put a two-way mirror there. I had to see her exposed.
"You can say that it is a mental kink. I feel sure it is, but I can't help it. I cannot ever be friendly with a person unless they are willing to undress in front of me. When George (a friend Edward had met outside the home) came to visit me, the first thing I asked him to do was to take all his clothes off. I am not in the least sexually attracted to him, but my kink forced me to see him naked before I could accept him as a friend. To me, nakedness symbolizes frankness and honesty. It means to me that there is no part of him that is hidden from me. This is just the physical side, but there is a mental side as well. I like frankness in speech and thought. I reveal myself willingly for anyone to see, and expect others to do the same. Any concealment of any kind creates a barrier between me and another person. A barrier means that I can't get through to that person. It is a mental and physical block."
In order to obtain these exclusive interviews with Edward, our psychological researcher, an attractive and mature woman, was required to be completely naked in his presence. The discussions were conducted at his home during a temporary release from confinement, and he kept his word not to approach the woman at all.
"He looked at me more with a curious kind of interest," she reported, "rather than anything erotic. It was such an odd sensation being naked in front of a man like that while he told me all about his dreadful past. However, I was never really afraid of him. My training as a nurse and now a researcher has taught me how to deal with all kinds of people. I'm afraid I can't say much for his own physique-pudgy, fleshy, very little body hair and smooth skin like a woman's. Certainly, this was the strangest assignment I've had.
"It was absolutely weird to listen to the man talk. He was so intense and serious, so coldly confident of himself. He never doubts for a moment that none of his daughters will ever testify against him. He feels a hundred per cent sure that when all is over with, they will return to live with him, drawn to him like a powerful magnet, absolutely unable to escape the spell of sexual hypnotism he has woven around them.
"I think there must be something in the saying that there is a fine line between madness and genius. Edward's scholastic record at the university was outstanding, and he's one of the most brilliant men in his field of endeavor in the whole country."
PSYCHOLOGICAL COMMENT: First of all we see a distinct pattern of paranoia throughout Edward's actions. People must physically bare themselves to him to reveal their honesty. Otherwise, he distrusts them. He uses this strange logic as a way to cope with his paranoia.
Along with this fear of persecution and distrust, Edward has decided delusions of grandeur in that he cries out again and again that his method of bringing up children is the only "right" way, all other parents are wrong, they don't understand the genius of his "right" thinking.
Edward's complete loss of reality is nowhere better exemplified than in the accusations of greediness he makes against the husband of his 22-year-old daughter. Many a loving father regrets the "loss" of a daughter. But to Edward it was a personal blow to his psychotic scheme to hold her love forever. For 16 years he had labored to make her a physical and mental slave, utterly dependent upon him not only for the necessities of fife that all parents provide, but for the sexual satisfaction of adult life as well.
He shouts about the word "LOVE" with extreme emphasis, at times imparting to it almost the true context of deep familial affection, but then he accompanies it with life-like sketches of the most depraved orgies among himself and his daughters. He waxes poetic in beautifully rhymed and metered verse that is technically superior to much of the best published today. But the theme of his father-child love is all about teaching his pubescent daughter to masturbate and to ask for cunnilingus from her own father.
While Edward is extremely jealous of any other male with designs on his daughters, he is willing to "encourage" his youngest to have Lesbian relations. This alone could demonstrate a flight from the homosexual component in his own nature, and serves as a barometer of how far he would go in acts of depravity involving others. Doubtless, his interest is voyeuristic and he would like to watch his daughter in sexual congress with a Lesbian as a new erotic "kick."
like Rita's father in the case before, Edward's desire to observe his daughter in the bathroom is a compulsive thing that he went to great trouble to realize. Rita was taken to a man's apartment where sound movies of her could be made as she went to the toilet and showered. Edward had two-way mirrors installed so that he could watch this same detail "live" from an adjoining room.
This scatological interest-gaining pleasure from the processes and products of elimination in regard to one sexually attractive-is common to many sexual psychopaths.
Although Edward's psychoanalysis is not completed, and he is fighting it all the way, we feel certain that environmental factors in early childhood will reveal a great deal of emotional deprivation. He now deliberately drives people from him by his controversially sordid behavior. But at one time in his life, the pattern was probably reversed, and he felt that others repelled him from them. He is now fighting back.
Edward seems to be so desperate for real love that he feels he must bare the very pit of his perverted soul to all who will listen, just as he expects them to be physically naked before him. In effect, he is saying to his daughters, "You will love me in spite of myself. You will love the real me that exists beneath this corpulent body and tainted mind. You will love me because I will make you love me, bind you to me forever by that 'silver cord of love'. "
This case is far from concluded at the time of our study, and we can only hope that at least the three girls can be dissuaded from their mesmerized race down the path of this unusually strange incestuous quadrangle.
Case History (14):
FETISHISM AND PARTIALISM IN ADULTHOOD RESULTING FROM FORGOTTEN MOTHER-SON INCEST
Wilhelm Stekel in his tome-sized study SEXUAL ABERRATIONS, reported on what he called a unique case of calf-partialism. Because it exemplifies so well the role of incest in childhood that is often forced back to the subconscious but manifests itself in adult preferences, we have included it here.
"Mr. G.T., a 38-year-old actor, consulted me because of impotence," Dr. Stekel began his report, summarizing the patient's problem. "Although married for the past few years, he is not capable of coitus with his exquisitely beautiful wife."
During the initial sessions, the psychiatrist learned that in the first 18 months of his marriage G.T. had managed to have erection and partial coitus with his wife, but that it ended in premature ejaculation and there was no climax for the wife. For the six months prior to seeing the doctor, his penis would not get hard at all with his wife, but he was able to achieve erection and have intercourse with other women under certain circumstances.
G.T. also related that he had a mania for well-shaped legs, and often gained a throbbing erection at the sight of sheerly stockinged calves and ankles on a woman. As far back as he could recall, to about age 5 or 6, he had always been attracted to legs. In his youth, it was the calf of a boy or girl that excited him. But as he grew older, legs of young women, girls, even male children, had great appeal for him.
Further along in analysis, G.T. admitted a strange practice that he had carried on for several years without getting into trouble. He would walk along the streets of Vienna observing each young girl carefully. His prey were 14-to 18-year-olds of "child-like" appearance and personality.
When he found one to his liking, he would approach her casually and exude a great deal of charm and authority, asking if she would be interested in a glamorous dancing career on the stage. He would explain that he was looking for a girl of her type and would be able to get her in a prominent dancing troupe if she was willing to undergo the most strenuous and demanding training.
When a girl succumbed to his appeal, which many did, he would take her to a hotel suite he had already rented and convince her that it was absolutely necessary to strip down to only her shoes and stockings. After directing the almost nude young beauty through several extremely difficult steps, he would inevitably find fault with her performance and smack her lightly on the calves with his belt.
On those occasions where the girl's reactions showed her to be frightened, cowardly or subdued, he would quickly take the advantage of this weakness and make the lashes stronger, and sometimes whip her resoundingly across the naked buttocks like a stem taskmaster of the ballet.
As a part of the highly disciplined "training," G.T. would bind the nude girl to a window sash and thus force her to stand on tip-toe. Her discomfort and pain brought him a sadistic pleasure and he would gloat menacingly.
Many of the girls seemed to enjoy the procedure. They became fascinated with his apparent sincerity and seriousness, captivated by his charm. And in these instances he would have intercourse with them. However, he stated that the coitus was quite weak and his potency lasted only a matter of seconds.
In the few cases of revolt by a girl, where she would scream or threaten to call the police, G.T. had an established routine whereby he made a joke of the whole thing. His technique proved successful, however, two and three times a week over a long period of time.
This man had also a passion for stealing the underwear of women who appealed to him, and taking the items to bed with him. The soiled odor of the garments, particularly the smell of underpants that had been worn, had a peculiar effect upon him.
Of his early childhood, G.T. explained:
"My first sexual excitement took place in my fifth year. I was standing between my mother's legs and brushed, or rather, stroked her calf. My mother was a very lovely and rather well-built woman, and I sensed a very strong feeling of pleasure. My penis became stiff.
"This impression was quite definitive for the rest of my life. I continued to desire my mother's leg and wanted to stroke it again. For a while, my mother permitted me to do so, but she soon noticed the sexual ecstasy I derived from this play and forbade me the pleasure. I found a way nevertheless. Whenever she would he down to sleep, I would wait until she were asleep and then lay myself next to her on the sofa in such a position that I could stroke her leg and even rub my penis against her calf. I derived the keenest delight from this, but it soon became insufficient for my desires. I then began to masturbate without being near my mother. I would pick out one of her old petticoats, put it between my legs and then masturbate or rub on it until that fine feeling came.
"I also remember lying in bed between them (his parents), but I don't recall ever having heard or seen them have intercourse. My father had become quite poor ... It was then that my mother made some money out of men. When I was ll, she would take me along, find herself a man, and bring him along home. We children would then have to leave the room and would have lots of fun. 'Uncle' often promised me presents and gave me money, but my mother would take it away and then say she lost it. Some time later, my sister also had many affairs, my mother having played the go-between.
"She (his mother) displayed all kinds of disgusting little habits. For instance, she would rub her fingers through her toes and then put them in her mouth. She often had her fingers in her vagina, so that her hand always smelled strongly."
Dr. Stekel, who was credited with conducting over 10,000 complete psychoanalyses during his brilliant career, carefully analyzed all the dreams that G.T. could recall. A pattern developed. There was always a woman in these dreams who provoked his lust. The woman reminded him of his mother and made him recall that she used to rub his forehead when he was ill and place cold packs on his brow.
There seemed to be a particular significance to the laying of the hand on his head, but Stekel could not probe deeply enough with conventional methods to get past the mental block G.T. had put in the way. Resorting to hypnotism, he was finally able to dig deeper into the subconscious and bring out the most important part of the mother-son relationship, the incident he had tried so hard to entirely forget.
"I see before me a large, white-immense-belly," the patient stated while hypnotized, "I have my fingers beneath it. I smell my fingers and put them in my mouth. I am lying between my parents in bed. I raise myself a little. Both parents are fast asleep. I crawl over to my mother, who doesn't mind. I crawl down to her feet and embrace her calves. Gradually I crawled up higher-no-it's not possible (resistance to the memory)-yet-I can see it quite clearly. I licked my mother. She closed her legs tightly around me so that her knees touched me. She tousled my hair...."
Through the Freudian probing of other dreams with the aid of hypnosis, Dr. Stekel also learned of a homosexual incident during G.T.'s childhood that had a bizarre sexual link-up with his mother and sister. For a time, one of the boy's own schoolteachers was renting a room at his home and having an open affair with his mother. One night, he recalled that both his mother and sister locked themselves in the room with this man for several hours and there were sounds of merrymaking from inside.
At first, G.T. denied that he was ever personally involved with the teacher. But the psychiatrist finally persuaded him to admit the following:
"Well-the teacher gave me lessons. We were often alone in his room. He would put his penis in my left hand and I would rub it until a white juice would run out."
"The teacher used to undress me and then switch me lightly on the legs. Later on he used to do that in school too. He also tried to put his penis in my rectum, but it hurt me and I cried out. He then put his finger in and I liked it."
"He used to pinch my whole body, but especially my calves and buttocks."
"I understand now why I'm always running about so much. I'm really running after all these experiences I had in childhood."
PSYCHOLOGICAL COMMENT: Dr. Stekel classifies this case as a classic example of the "power of infantile experiences and the influence of environment" upon the psycho-sexual aspects of the adult personality.
G.T.'s impotence with his wife was brought about by a masochistic desire to spoil his own pleasure, to atone for his sadistic and adulterous liaisons by denying himself sexual pleasure with his desirable young wife. He married as an attempt to free himself from the bonds of his infantile habits. But his wife quickly became a mother-image.
The mania for women's calves is self-explanatory once the facts of his earlier experiences were brought out. He rubbed his penis against his mother's legs while she was asleep, or pretended to be asleep. It seems she must have been aware of his actions and enjoyed them when considering that she obviously received pleasure when the young boy cunnilingued her, because she held his head and tousled his hair as an indication thereof.
The episodes with the young girls in the hotel are explained by Stekel as an expression of his desire to relive a "composite of several early memories (mother, sister and teacher). " In fact, the patient himself was aware of this at the end of the analysis when he said, "I'm really running after all these experiences I had in childhood."
His desire to steal women's under things was traceable to the time he took his mother's petticoat as a masturbatory aid after she denied him the use of her naked leg.
We will have to agree that this case is uniquely representative of mother-son incest and the later sexual manifestation that can result. As the noted Viennese psychiatrist himself commented, "Not all such cases show clear connections with incestuous tendencies as this one has."
Case History (15):
LESBIAN INCEST EVIDENCED IN BI-SEXUAL TRIO ACTS
Plagues by guilt-feelings, 27-year-old Brad consulted us recently about a situation in which he had become involved as a result of his "swinging" activities in a free-love group in the South. His case provides a vivid insight into one of the most unfortunate forms of Lesbian incest extant, and easily ranks with the depravity exemplified in Rita's situation in Case History 12 from a homosexual standpoint.
The mother in this instance, Carolyn, was a stunningly attractive blonde of 39 who wore stylishly tight and revealing clothes to accentuate every curve of her well-preserved figure. The 13-year-old daughter, Daphne, had fight brown hair and a nymphet body with developing breasts and attractive hips and legs.
Brad recited the experience in precisely these words:
"I met this woman via a phone call from (someone he knew in the group). Knowing she was 'one of Us', so to speak, I called her one Saturday afternoon, and she invited me over. I got there about three o'clock and we talked, had a couple of drinks, and she invited me to stay for dinner.
"All during the afternoon, the girl was there, and not being blind, I noticed very early that she was very careless with her skirt and displayed a good deal of VERY enchanting leg, etc.-a true nymphet-and, in general, got me pretty intrigued, as she was a pretty child and showed great promise of a lovely woman a few years from now.
"Any way, after dinner, her mother and I went out for a few drinks, and when we got back about ll, Daphne had gone to bed. Momma and I soon got into bed also, and almost immediately she told me that she liked girls, especially young ones, and did I feel the same?
"Sensing what was coming, I said yes, but felt that it was too dangerous. As you have guessed, she soon went and fetched the young one who was quite obviously no stranger to all of this. After a little coaxing we got her nightie off. Her mother said she was 13-my guess would be more like ll to 12. No pubic hair and breasts about lemon-size, which to me says ll to 12.
"She was a lovely little thing and Carolyn and I took turns in cunnilinguing her. This, so help me, was followed by a "sixty-nine" with mother and daughter, and then with daughter and me with mamma teaching her what to do with me. Finally, having found the young girl to be virgin, as far as actual intercourse was concerned, I had relations with mamma.
"Daphne lay with her face down where she could watch us, and Carolyn produced some lubricant and indicated that I should use my fingers (anally) with Daphne. Carolyn was more interested in watching this than in our intercourse and, so help me, she asked me to (pedicate) Daphne, which I did to our mutual enjoyment.
"Never have I felt such rapture-but when it was over, reaction set in and I got panicky and real worried. And, even though both of them seemed perfectly happy about the whole thing, I never went back again. I think that I enjoyed it so much, I might even get to prefer it.
"In retrospect, I know that this is not particularly uncommon, though I've only heard of one other case with a girl that young. More often they seem to be in the middle or late teens. I admit I liked it and might even do it again if I knew where they lived now. I guess I've rationalized that if both the girl and her mother want it, why should I worry?"
PSYCHOLOGICAL COMMENT: If Brad had rationalized his conduct to his own satisfaction faction he would have had no need to consult a psychologist. Of course, it is easy to see the strong temptation that Carolyn imposed upon his strong multi-directional libido. But no amount of outside influence can excuse what he did. He was a mature adult of good intelligence. He was not intoxicated. It is certain he knew the difference between right and wrong. He admits it.
But while we feel that Brad must certainly take his share of the responsibility, Carolyn is obviously the real villain in this twisted situation. The mere fact that she was referred to Brad by a "swinger's" group, indicates that it may have been an event which took place each weekend with a new partner.
Further indication of these affairs being a regular occurrence was the conduct of Daphne herself, her willingness and overt enjoyment of anal intercourse, something that would be almost impossible of achievement had it not been practiced previously.
While cases like this are rare, we hear reports of them from time to time from thoroughly reliable sources. There is definitely a syndrome. Basically, the mother has developed an incestuous Lesbian desire for her daughter that she has allowed herself to pursue. A highly libidinous person capable of heterosexual pleasure also, she introduces the man to heighten her own depraved enjoyment.
But more important than this as a motivational factor is that the third party helps her to share the guilt. Just as Brad rationalizes that "if both the girl and the mother want it" why should he worry, the mother turns it around to fit her. The man is a participant and observer. He approves. It helps her to justify her own actions.
There is not enough information here to speculate on the elements of psychosexual development leading to this situation, although it does appear that the mother may have been engaging in sex acts with the daughter from a very early age, as witness Daphne's relaxed participation. We know of many cases, for instance, where highly sexed mothers have been known to masturbate their daughters from inimagine.
Brad's statement is invaluable as a thoroughly credible behavioral report on one of the most despicable practices of incest known, yet one which is far more prevalent and sought-after than most people realize.
Case History (16):
FATHER-SON INCEST RESULTING IN PARANOIA IN ADULTHOOD
This unusually revealing case study is taken from the files of a well known Southern psychiatrist. The patient's quotes are paraphrased to eliminate some of the extremely vulgar language which he used throughout.
"My wife sticks pins in me at night to get me to talk about myself in my sleep," Don began, explaining his persecution complex. "I know she's cheated on me because my son doesn't look like anybody in my family. People look at me sometimes and try to see what's going on in my mind. I know that my wife was a whore before we were married. I can tell by the size of her vagina and the shape of her mouth. She tried to poison my food one time. I know because it tasted fuzzy ... different..."
This patient's own unresolved conflicts had created serious delusional trends in his personality as a defense projection. And as the analysis progressed, he was able to dredge up early sexual experiences of a homosexual nature with his father. At the time of his psychiatric consultation, Don was a 29-year-old married cab driver with a 5-year-old boy. He had quit high school as a junior. He liked the freedom and independence he found in hacking for a living.
Don's mother had passed away when he was an infant and he and his older sister were sent to an orphanage. His father came to visit him frequently and also brought him home to live for periods up to six months. The reasons for this attention, however, were not the usual pangs of paternal love, as we shall readily see.
"Dad was a queer. His friends were all queers," Don told the psychiatrist after much prodding. "It made me the way I am. I was ashamed for the both of us. He (sucked my penis) when I was 17. The first time he ever did it I was just 4 years old. I don't remember any good or bad sensations that first time...
"He come to the orphanage to see me when I was ll and took me out to one of the outhouses where he done it again. I was embarrassed and didn't come and there wasn't any kick to it for me.
"Soon after that I reached the age where I could come. When I masturbated, I made believe Dad was (fellating) me."
In his earlier childhood, however, Don told of having strong heterosexual fantasies: "I was 5 when I started thinking about what girls had between their legs. I used to dream sexy things about them when I was 8 or 9, and think how nice it would be for them to do the same thing Dad did to me (fellatio). "
At the orphanage, there was much homosexual play among the boys. Don recalls that one of the first times he ejaculated was into an older boy's mouth. But most of the activity consisted of masturbating each other. At the school, he entertained constant daydreams of the little girls sitting around him engaging in oral relations upon him. And a sadistic element entered the picture when he would imagine that he denuded them and sliced off their breasts and cut into their vaginas with a knife,, These were most strong in about the seventh said eighth grades. He masturbated to orgasm about or 6 times weekly in high school.
Yet it was the very real and traumatic experiences with his own father and his perverted friends that had the most telling effect on Don's later life. He described those events in this manner:
"When I was with Dad for six months one time he used his mouth on me all the time, and three of his queer friends worked on me too. I'd sleep a lot in the daytime. If I wasn't sleeping, I'd be lying in the bed when my Dad would want me, and he'd come sit down by me and run his hands up and down over my naked legs and over my (penis). We'd both take off our clothes and since I wouldn't (fellate) him, he'd do me, while I took his (penis) in my hand and masturbated the thing. Most of all, he just liked to (fellate) me. I'd he on the bed and put my legs over the side and he'd kneel on the floor and kiss up my legs. He'd run his tongue all around my (sex organs) and then (fellate) my (penis). He'd keep it up while I was coming and I liked it a lot. But I was always embarrassed and ashamed of both of us when it was over. He had so many wild parties with his queer friends late at night that I moved my mattress up to the attic to sleep.
"This friend came to me up in the attic one night and I knew what he wanted and decided to let him (fellate) me. He kissed around my (penis) and then he tongued my (anus). I thought he was doing it to get ready to (perform pederasty), but I found out that some people just get their kicks from doing that. I liked the feel of him doing it, but I stopped him when I wanted him to (fellate) me.
"Another night this different guy come up and I didn't care whether he did anything to me or not. I'd already masturbated twice that day. But this guy didn't waste any time. He took my (penis) in his mouth and worked on it with his tongue, I guess, because he didn't move his head, but boy it felt good and I come right in his mouth pretty soon.
"One other of Dad's friends made me too. I was lying in bed with just a pair of shorts on. He took out my (penis) and started (fellating) me while he masturbated himself. I liked to watch him (ejaculate) . It went all over the place. After that, I lived with three (fellators) for 17 months and I masturbated a lot too...I didn't have any women at that time for sex."
Don's first encounter with actual intercourse took place with a drunk woman who was having her period. It disgusted him. He continued to frequent prostitutes though, always insisting that they perform fellatio, and compared their techniques with that of his father. He also performed cunnilingus on several prostitutes and felt disgusted with himself afterwards.
Toward his older sister, Don had a completely different outlook, and deliberately fought off any sexual feeling toward her. He said: "I try not to think about her that way. I wanted her. She had a hell of a body on her, nice (breasts) and everything. I had dreams of seducing her; and when I was at sea in the Navy, I dreamed of us both
(having oral and coital intercourse). But I was so damned ashamed of myself I'd do everything I knew to stop thinking about her that way."
There was an Oedipal attachment to his sister. Don made her a Madonna and put her on a pedestal as the mother he had never known. He entertained heterosexual and homosexual incest fantasies accompanied by masturbation while married, even though his wife satisfied him often with fellatio and coitus.
PSYCHIATRIC COMMENT: The psychiatrist who analyzed Don attributes his paranoia to sex guilt that was brought about over the homosexual relations with his father, which were initially psychic traumas. A contributory factor was his lack of mother-love. Feelings of insecurity and rejection were undoubtedly manifested by his being placed in an orphanage. His fixation of libido at the oralerotic stage was completed by his experiences at the orphanage.
Incestuous fantasies about his sister compounded Don's problem and plagued him even more with guilt. He thought his wife was sticking needles in him to get him to talk in his sleep. These delusions are not uncommon to those males homo-sexually seduced. The needle represents penetration by a phallic symbol.
His fantasies of wanting to cut off female breasts may well be a desire to castrate his father as a way of revenge for seducing him. There is some ambivalence in his attitude toward women. He desires sexual acts with them and receives gratification from this, but is ashamed afterward, while simultaneously worshipping many women as if they were sister-Madonna images.
The psychiatrist stated that Don developed an insight into his delusions during analysis, and began to achieve much greater satisfaction in marital coitus. His deviational indulgences became secondary and he showed evidence of making a full adjustment in the future.
