Introduction

Two thousand years ago, Horace wrote (Satyricon II):

Naked, under the lurid light

Her thighs heave hotly

Astride the upturned stallion.

Zoophilic erotica, appeasing the spectator side of bestiality, is common in art and literature-much more common perhaps than bestiality itself. The "circuses" or "spectacles" of the brothels have been popular throughout the history of whoredom. The chronicles of the ancients are filled with bestial anecdotes and even the facades of a few great cathedrals and other public buildings of the Middle Ages, decorated with sculptures of nuns and other women being ravished by apes or set upon by leering snakes and other animals, attests a popular appeal for the subject.

The incidence of bestial contacts in the free sexual atmosphere of the Greco-Roman period were much higher than in succeeding Christian eras. The sexual menagerie of the Greeks and Romans was vast, from household crocodiles to pet pythons and other snakes used as "bed coolers" on hot nights.

The sexual license of our own era, which perhaps comes closest to competing with the Greco-Roman, is accompanied by mass social acceptance of zoophilia unequalled in history. Dog shows, cat shows, horse shows and their wide appeal are open evidence of mass zoophilia and the current dog fashion fad (especially for poodle lovers) including mink coats (at $300), bikini outfits, sweaters and skirts, false eyelashes, toenail polish, psychedelic raincoats, jeweled sunglasses, etc., for pet dogs is zoophilia on an almost hysterical level. Zoophiles easily exercise, vicariously, the subconscious bestial inclinations that may often obsess them. A common kennel scene is the sexually frustrated "dog lover" who watches with a flushed face and heaving bosom as the penis of a prize-winning stud is guided into the vagina of her pet poodle. The sexual excitement of her pet is far surpassed by her own and in some instances even supersedes it.

In recent years, undoubtedly as the result of increasing sexual enlightenment, the "my pet needs a sex life too" dogma has reared a compassionate head, where pet owners are transferring their own sexual desires and identities to their pets. Surprisingly, this motivation is offered often by subjects involved in bestial relations with household pets, especially with cats and small dogs such as Chihuahuas and toy poodles, where the total bestial effort is in masturbation of the animals or joint masturbation by the subject of herself and the animal. Several kennel owners have testified that they have begun to receive a number of requests to arrange "sex romps" for their pets. "Spaying" and castration requests of vets are decreasing-the operations have begun to be considered by many animal lovers as inhumane.
