Foreword

Fiction, particularly erotic fiction, can take many forms. Candy, a modern classic by Terry Southern, was a delightful blend of humor and fantasy. The Autobiography of a Flea, an Eighteenth Century classic, was a sharp edged parody of the then popular works of the Marquis de Sade. And when critics have searched for a common denominator in erotic fiction they have generally been hard pressed to find any single factor that can be universally applied.

There is, however, one area of erotic portrayal which seems almost universal and that is the author's use of an interesting blend of reality and fantasy. Such a blend is clearly evident in this book. This is a novel in which the narrative seems almost real enough to be credible-almost, yet not quite. The locale, for example, is never mentioned in this novel. There are only the vaguest of hints, much the same as we receive about the season of the year. There is, in fact, an unreal, dreamlike quality to the entire narrative.

And it is thus that the author offers the reader an intellectual challenge. Are these real people engaged in a real day-to-day struggle of life? If so, where are their conflicts, triumphs and frustrations? Are their entire existences centered around their sexual activities?

It should be noted that the various behavioral patterns portrayed herein have solid foundation in our contemporary society. The incest, pre-pubertal sex, adultery, oral sex, anal sex and pedophilia portrayed here are all recorded behavior patterns in our society. Incidence is noted in any number of respected reports, including the famous Kinsey studies. The situations described in this novel do take place.

Psychologists, however, tell us that these behavioral patterns are more often fantasy than reality. And it would seem that this is precisely what the author intended to portray in Hot Nights With the Neighbor Kids. This is a narrative describing what might happen if the fantasies of seven individuals suddenly became reality. Many times in the narrative the reader will wonder if one of the characters will suddenly awaken to find the entire situation a dream sequence. Be it reality or erotic fantasy, this tale provides the reader an interesting view of not at all uncommon behavioral trends in our modern society.
