The reader may well puzzle over the applicability of the word "kinky" to all of the sexual preferences mentioned in the preceding quotes.
What does "kinky" mean? Does it have a special connotation to the person of strong libido with a very active interest in sex? Does it refer to male homosexual practices? Lesbian activity? Anal practices? Mutual masturbation? Or, is the term one that can be applied to almost all kinds of deviations, variations and perversions of the human sexual instinct?
According to Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged (G. & C. Merriam, Springfield 1961), the word simply means: "1) having or full of kinks: closely twisted or curled-used usu. of hair....2) Lively, Spirited....3) Crooked. . . . "
However, upon looking up the word in Eric Partridge's scholarly A Dictionary of Slang and
Unconventional English (MacMillan, New York 1961), it may be observed that this predominantly British-English publication describes "kinky" as: "A homosexual, whether male or female: semi-medical since ca. 1920."' It attributes the meaning as deriving from the non-sexual colloquialism adjective form of "kinky" as referring to something or someone "eccentric, mentally twisted." In the latter sense, of course, the connotation of "mentally twisted" could include reference to sexual psychopathologies.
The only dictionary of more recent publication that provides us with a sexual supposal for "kinky" is Dr. John Trimble's 5,000 Adult Sex Words & Phrases (Brandon House, North Hollywood 1966). He defines the word only in the adjective form as a slang term meaning "homosexual."
But slang usage of words have a tendency to change in meaning much more than conventional definitions, and the change is often broadening or more encompassing. For several years in England, "kinky" has been widely used to denote any kind of sexual act (or person) that the individual employing the word feels is offbeat, bizarre or "abnormal," i.e., "twisted." And this is largely the way that most American sexual sophisticates have understood the slang meaning of the word for some time now.
What is "normal" to one person, however, may be very "abnormal" to the next. Prostitutes for years have spoken of clients with "kinky" preferences. But one prostitute may have an aversion to fellating a male and would consider such a request and such a person as "kinky." The same with cunnilingus.
Ordinarily though, the prostitute has used the word "kinky" (both in Britain and the U.S.) to mean a grossly perverted type of sexual act and the person with such inclinations. The sadomasochist who likes to be beaten, tied down and tortured, or, conversely, to flog the prostitute brutally; along with the man who has scatalogical preferences, have been referred to as "kinky." Homosexual individuals are hardly ever considered to be "kinky," but a person who likes to watch two people of the same sex make explicit erotic love might be well referred to as "kinky."
From a slang definition of the 1920's in Britain meaning "homosexual," the word "kinky" has evolved to include almost all variant sex acts, particularly the more generally distasteful types of erotic preferences. Today, the word is increasingly used to describe more sophisticated and subtle types of offbeat sexual practices and those preferring them.
It is within the latter context that I use the word in referring to The Kinky Girls. These are females whose exceedingly strong sexual desires are not necessarily "painful" or "dirty," many are not even "abnormal" by modern medical and psychological definition. Yet, the great majority of people still look upon the acts and desires and the methods of achieving sexual satisfaction pursued by these females as "kinky" and highly perverse.
The psychodynamics of these bizarre preferences will be commented upon after the study, report or case-history of each female. The early psychosexual development is available in many instances, and we can make intelligent guesses as to the fixative traumas involved in others and look upon the reported experiences as meaningful behavioral studies.
Some form of masturbation, either self or mutual, plays a large role in the behavior of many of the females to be studied in intimate detail in the following chapters. And this is quite pertinent, because in masturbation, even mutual or group masturbation, fantasy is often an integral element. A person masturbating may be thinking of nothing more than regular coitus with a spouse or other sex partner. Or, he or she may use the opportunity to let the mind wander and dream of the most way out and bizarre sexual acts the mind of man can fathom. Masturbation, per se, however, can hardly be termed "abnormal" or injurious. Only the guilt-feelings that often accompany or follow masturbation may be psychologically (but unnecessarily) harmful.
The simultaneous stimulation of the sex organs with the hands and fingers (mutual masturbation) is the very first mode of interpersonal sexual contact encountered by nearly everyone on the face of this earth. In later years, this is still the most common method of foreplay. Earlier self-masturbation, which occurs among probably a majority of individuals, and later adult self-satisfaction that must often serve as a substitute, indicates to me that masturbation is very likely to be the most universal sex act of all. Documented studies, such as the Kinsey reports and others, bear this out Masturbation is practiced (or has been or will be practiced) by more people than any other act of stimulation and/or orgasm. It may very well be the most frequently practiced sexual act of mankind, whether accomplished alone or interpersonally.
Thus, while masturbation per se is certainly not "kinky" or abnormal or perverse, the accompanying thoughts and fantasies may be. The degree, if any, of "kinkiness" depends on the way and under what conditions the masturbation is carried out, and what is in the mind of the individual.
The most innocently begun teenage necking inevitably results in some form of mutual masturbation, of course. And the two partners who have passed the point of no-return, but with a lack of knowledge, fear of disease or pregnancy, will continue the digital manipulation to climax. In some cases, there may be an advancement to oral-genital relations, sucking of the breasts, etc. Yet, in the opinion of many authorities, these, too, are masturbatory in nature.

I have known of at least one case where a woman wore an inverted strap-on dildo all day. She had the constant feeling of penile penetration, and her vaginal area would sense the feeling of penile movement as she walked.
The Japanese are noted for what is probably the oldest female auto-masturbatory "gadget" of this type in the world. It is called "rin-no-tam" and consists of two rather thin metal balls (approximately the size of ping-pong balls) that are inserted into the vagina and worn either all day, or while slowly swinging back and forth either on a regular swing, or by lying on the floor on the back, grasping the legs and rolling back and forth on the back). One of these balls has a noticeably heavy deposit of mercury that causes very subtle vibrations as the female walks about or moves her body in a swinging position. She is kept in a constant state of pleasurable arousal, and may also experience orgasms.
Kinky? In the opinion of most, the answer would probably be "yes." Yet, who is to say how many females whom one sees every day may either be wearing such a device or practicing thigh-friction masturbation, all but unnoticed as she strides about, adjusts her legs and readjusts them while sitting in the subway or bus, or at her desk at work?
More puzzling still, what are the erotic thoughts running through the minds of these females? While it is true that females do not ordinarily fantasize about sexual acts or persons with whom they have not performed sex acts, many have participated in and enjoyed all kinds of "kinky" sex relations. Then, too, we are not dealing with the average female when we consider "The Kinky Girls." Their libidos are quite strong and may equal or greatly surpass that of the average male.
Where does it start? What are the psychodynamics involved? Is early trauma always a fixative factor?
In my opinion, we do not have to go all the way back to early childhood and imagine to determine where most sexual manias in the female are established. The predisposition toward a desire for sexual attention (or other recognitions) may well have been formed in the very early years. The discovery of the pleasures of self-masturbation may have served for many years as an escape from childhood unpleasantries and parental strictness. A sex drive may have been established to a degree, but the orientation or direction of that libido is often neutral or on the brink of going one way or the other at the time of first interpersonal contacts or specific feeling generated in one or more anomalous directions.
Both boys and girls often engage in homosexual acts in their early teens. This is most common, and usually does not alter or create the sexual drive toward homosexual pleasure. The masturbating boys have visions of females with whom they would like to have sex. The young girls who manipulate each other to orgasm are usually more romantic in their thoughts of boys as lovers. They enjoy the physical pleasure only, and do not necessarily fantasize an act of sex with a male. The girlfriend's fingers are a mechanical means to enjoyment, yet the sharing of such sexual sensations may induce a feeling of affection for each other more so than among masturbating boys.
This feeling of affection ordinarily gives way to a similar and much stronger desire for the same kind of closeness with males. Again, however, we are dealing with the average or "normal" progression of psychosexual development. The kinky girls do not conform to this pattern, just as many boys predisposed to homosexual seduction and orientation (or other variations), have their anomalies more clearly established or firmly fixated by these adolescent encounters. They are not thinking about naked girls, as are most of their friends.
Many a female becomes "kinky" in sexual orientation because of unusual acts and relations experienced with her boyfriend (or girlfriend). If she is permissive, of high libido, and willing to try out almost any kind of relation that promises pleasure, escape, something different, her initial interpersonal erotic contacts may establish preferences that follow her through adulthood. She may react negatively to a situation and be traumatized by fear of coitus or "abnormal" and forceful demands of her companion. Or, on the other hand, she may find the mode of relationship most desirable and exciting.
Thus, it is that so many of the kinky girls have such a strong desire for masturbation in one form or another, as well as active interest in so many other forms of nan genital-to-genital heterosexual coitus. While the average person may find these "normal variations" utilized as ancillary forms of foreplay or occasionally to orgasm, the same is not true of the kinky girls. To them, the offbeat, unusual and bizarre types of sexual acts are compulsive.
In the average course of necking that leads to a sexual act for the first time, a female may become obsessed with one particular aspect of that initial encounter. It may be that her first grasp of her boyfriend's throbbing erection will overwhelmingly fascinate her. The feel of it there in her hands and the realization that her sexual presence is so potent may fixate in her an "abnormal" attraction to the feel of the virile male penis in her hand. She may become a veritable phallic worshipper and give in readily to a resurrection of the normal infantile pleasures of sucking. She adores the penis. She must kneel to it, suck it, heap homage upon it, and let the male know that she adores the power and strength represented by his erection. instead of enjoying fellatio as an occasional fillip, she may become obsessed with a compulsive desire to see men's penises, to feel them, fondle both the penis and testicles in adoration and wonder, letting a man do anything to her with his penis that he desires. She likes to watch a man masturbate, lets him ejaculate on her breasts, under her arms, all over her face, in her hair, virtually any place that it pleases him.
And while she may feel humiliated and degraded by giving in to various sadistic types of desires in the male, her very submissiveness may spur on the overactive erotic imagination of her more inventive and curious partner. One attracts the other into ever more variant relations until things begin to swiftly overstep the bounds of "normalcy." And the mania may well have begun that very first time the easily excitable female first felt the erect penis of her boyfriend as she held it in her sensitive hands, fondled it with her searching fingers.
So many sexual obsessions could become fixated in much the same way. Perhaps, instead of phallic worship and a response to humiliation (masochism), the obsession could begin with the act of masturbation itself. The female might also find a great pleasure in titillation of her lover's anus and thus realize that she would like the pleasure returned. The same type of "first discovery" could be true in the primary or secondary and strong preference for oral and/or anal acts.
If the first pleasurable sex relation involved a male who had to use much force and almost rape the girl, the memory of the sex-pleasure may become intertwined with brutality to a strong degree. As an adult, the female may react to a love partner only if he is rough and forceful with her, even to the point of beatings and verbal abuse to an extreme. Or, conversely, the initial forceful experience might sour her on men and contribute to her becoming a Lesbian in later life, preferring the soft caresses of another female to the "brutality" she associates with heterosexual relations.
I do not want to give the impression here that all sexual quirks of the female are so simple of explanation. While established in adolescent necking and sexual play, the predisposition and attraction for such behavior is likely to have occurred much earlier in life. An indelible mind-picture of having watched parents in intercourse is likely to be either a negative or positive factor. If the child interpreted the acts and sounds as denoting pleasure for her parents, perhaps no harm at all is done. But the female child often feels that the cries of her mother denoting heights of passion, are screams of pain because her father is hurting her mother.
In later adulthood, there are sometimes more simple and logical explanations for the female desire for what might be called "kinky" sex. If the experiences are thrilling and highly pleasurable when introduced by the love partner, the practices may become established preferences by habit or strong attraction toward the partner. There are also many instances where the desires have been there all along, possibly in the subconscious, and thus latent, only to be awakened in adulthood.
And there are other explanations. The dangers of spontaneous intercourse (assuming no contraceptive form is being utilized), make mutual masturbation, oral' genital acts and anal acts more acceptable and safe. This is true just as much with adults as with teenagers.
Lovers often find themselves in a position or situation in which mutual masturbation or possibly an oral-genital act can be achieved, but in which coitus would be difficult. Lovers in a theatre, parked in an automobile, enjoying an impassioned goodnight kiss at the doorway, even on the dance floor of a dimly illuminated club or at a private party, may provide the stimulus and opportunity for quick masturbatory or oral contact.
At an informal cocktail party once, I know of an instance where a female with strong oral-erotic desire lured various men into the kitchen with her on the pretext of fixing some fresh drinks. These fantastic sexual psychodramas are often ends in themselves, concluding in orgasm obtained by masturbation or in some other manner, usually not regular intercourse. Partners often exhaust themselves with very great amounts of masturbation while giving verbal vent to their most twisted and "evil" ideas on erotic possibilities. The masturbation becomes a substitute act, a fantasy supplement for their wildest dream binges; while the interpersonal element provides a certain thrill that would be absent for these type of individuals in solitary bouts of masturbation accompanied by the same fantasies.
The freedom of expression that is so much a part of the sexual revolution today, has made much use of graphic and electronic communication resulting in three somewhat innovative variations of psychic masturbatory aids for many who might otherwise shy away from intimately interpersonal love-making. In a solitary sense, each one of these methods of communication is one step removed from the other in depersonalization. And the kinky girls make frequent use of modern technology in satisfying their bizarre desires.
Mutual masturbation, although performed in physical proximity with one another, is a degree or more removed from a sexual "connection" and thereby a slightly depersonalized substitute for coitus, oral-genital or anal acts. Almost every ad and listing in many of the swinging publications either states or implies an interest in receiving and sending erotic and revealing letters and pictures.
In many instances, the advertiser will come right out and say that he or she likes to write and receive "hot" letters. Others say that they will answer only those replies with very "frank and revealing letter and photo." And the overwhelming majority clearly imply that they are interested in an exchange of "erotic ideas."

The kinky girl advertisers, in many cases, may be lonesome, ugly, have personality problems, a fear of actually facing a lover, afraid of involvement, yet something a little better than their own fantasies. Yet many are quite beautiful and are seeking actual contacts with lovers by learning all about them beforehand.
Lesbians, as well as those with every other type of variant erotic craving, find ways of subtly and euphemistically wording their ads in swinger magazines to appeal to the esoteric tastes of those with complementary interests. There is at least one club operating out of California providing outlets intended exclusively for Lesbians, and it is a safe bet, I think, that many of the kinky girls are members.
The classic pedophilic interest of an older (or young) man in the erotic charisma presented by a sexually attractive mother and her teenage or younger daughter is sometimes catered to quite cleverly by the kinky girls in their swinger ads. Whether they ever meet their sex objects or not, they live two completely different lives, and their personalities are often so neatly split that they do not regard the masturbating and clandestine trysts as a part of their real selves. Their anonymity serves as a protective shield from the judgment of society, their God and themselves, while it also protects them from personal involvement with a complete stranger. They have almost found a way to have their cake and eat it too.
This study will now proceed to investigate in more detail the individual cases of a variety of females whom I would put in the more or less general category of "The Kinky Girls." Because many of the manifestational aberrations and motivations overlap, each chapter will deal with only one female as the individual under study. In addition to their vivid recitations of their own experiences, there will be brief comments on the psychodynamics involved in each case, plus other meaningful information.
This report is the result of much grassroots research in the field of behavior of the kinky girls. However, this research was conducted among both those seeking professional help, as well as control interviewees. It is to be hoped that this volume will be a valuable contribution to the vast storehouse of knowledge being compiled on current human sexual behavior and psychological development today.
