Chapter 12

The following day, Thursday, a half-hour after Barney had left for work, Kim was surprised by John Cordon. He had come a day earlier than he had predicted, and he had brought clothing with him. The underwear fit perfectly, but the dress was a little large. So were the shoes, but Kim didn't care. This was her opportunity to get away.

"I've been transferred to an office in Meridian, Wisconsin," he told her. "Think you would like living there?"

"You do love me," Kim said, somewhat surprised.

"Of course," he nodded. "Hell! You gave yourself to me long before I admitted to loving you. Why would I tell you that I loved you after having gotten what I wanted if it wasn't so?"

"It's just that I've been used and abused by so many men, I thought you might not want to have anything to do with me."

"Hey, to begin with, you didn't do anything with those other men willingly, and secondly, I wouldn't give a damn if you had screwed the whole damn Eighth Army. I happen to be in love with you as a person."

"It's nice to hear," Kim smiled. "Are you sure you want to be saddled with a pauper like me?"

"I'm not marrying you for your money. Hell! I want to be the one to support and take care of you."

"Well a girl can't say no to something like that," Kim smiled. "Just let me get my briefcase, and we can be on our way."

"Sure," John said to her, not the least bit curious as to what the briefcase might contain.
