Chapter 9
"...And darling, he says he's been transferred permanently to Detroit! What do you think of that?"
"Nothing much," Don Ryder laughed, reaching instinctively for his wife's hand.
They were enjoying a late, leisurely breakfast. It was Saturday and the whole day stretched free before them.
"You should show a little more interest in my lover," June laughed teasingly.
"Your ex-lover, remember?"
June folded the letter and put it back in the envelope again. She was glad to hear from Harry Cameron, of course, especially as it was weeks since she had last seen him. That had been the night when ... She couldn't even begin to think of all the things that had happened that night. But the main thing was, that it marked the beginning of a whole new life for herself and Don. Now theirs was truly a storybook marriage, and nothing would ever change that. Not even the fact that Harry was coming to town permanently.
"But aren't you afraid I'll start seeing him again?"
June couldn't help persisting.
"Are you afraid that I'll suddenly start doing overtime again?"
They both laughed and June was happy with his answer.
"Harry also said in the letter that he had let Wanda know about his transfer and that she seemed delighted!"
"I bet she is! He's just her type!"
"Yes, they do seem well-matched."
Don looked lovingly at his wife.
"Anyway, one thing's for sure," he said slowly.
"What's that, darling?"
"I can guarantee he'll have his hands full keeping that sexy little stripper happy! And that means he won't have time to come snooping around here after you!"
"Well, he won't have to," June said slyly, "just as long as you don't get involved in any more overtime...."
But June knew in her heart there was no fear of that.
