Foreword
The idea of a "Sensual Spinster" may seem to be a contradiction in terms for those who still hold to Victorian notions about the nature of women. In the Nineteenth Century it was widely believed that women have very little sexual feeling or desire, and that strong sexual urges are confined to the male. Whatever small residue of erotic sensibility a woman might have, it was believed, could only be aroused by a man. Therefore, how could a spinster, a woman alone, be considered "sensual?"
Modern psychiatry has taught us the falsity of this idea. Women have just as much sexual desire and need as men, and in some cases much more. Woman's ability to achieve multiple orgasms, while most males must be content with one climax per sexual act, is a case in point. This desire is not dependent on marital status, either. A woman alone may have just as powerful a craving for sexual fulfillment as her married sister. The spinster experiences special difficulty in satisfying this craving, however, because our outmoded moral code condemns sex for the unmarried female.
One victim of this Victorian morality is Ron a Carter, heroine of "The Spinster Teacher." Thirty-eight and unmarried, Rona is plagued by sexual needs which her society does not allow her to gratify. With the passing of the years and the increase of her needs, Rona finds herself obsessed with bizarre fantasies, some of which may lead the reader to think that she is abnormal. Nothing could be further from the truth. Dr. Anthony Storr, noted British psychiatrist, says, "Bestiality is a sexual deviation which seldom comes under the direct scrutiny of the psychiatrist as an actual practice. Fantasies in which women are sudeced by animals are, however, familiar to everyone ... To the imagination, the animal represents sexuality freed from the restrictions imposed by civilization and humanity; and both men and women envy the abandon with which an animal may be supposed to satisfy its erotic needs."
Rona Carter's fantasies, then, are not in themselves "abnormal." What is abnormal is her situation. A fully mature sexual being, she finds herself isolated and frustrated by outdated social codes. "The Sensual Spinster" tells how Rona finally breaks out of these senseless restrictions and finds the sexual fulfillment which was always her natural right as a human being.
