Foreword

Many psychologists and sociologists today admit that the standards used to judge prior generations often do not serve as a gauge for contemporary behavioral patterns. They recognize the importance of environment as well as the sometimes dramatic change in values and standards. A homosexual personality, for example, developed in a community with a large number of gay people is often more the product of his or her environment rather than a traumatic psychological condition.

It would be a dangerous oversimplification to think of people as primarily products of their environment, yet environment cannot be ignored as a contributing factor to behavior.

In the area of sexual behavior, our contemporary society seems to be on a wild journey of discovery. This is not to say that any of these sexual behavior patterns that are so popular today are really new. Historians point out that men and women were doing the same things before the Roman Empire was even founded. What is new is public acceptance and/or tolerance of the behavioral patterns.

The result is that people are playing games for which there are no rules. And this is what the author illustrates so vividly.

The McElhaney family embarks on a sensual journey through extra-marital sex, wife-swapping, group sex and incest. Each member of the family has his or her own needs, and although each thinks of the adventure in individual terms, they seem at all times to be a family unit or team. They indulge in groundless fears and impose ridiculous rules upon themselves only to find that their discoveries are more emotionally meaningful than physically satisfying.

Some critics may object to the author's explicit use of eroticism in this novel, but few will challenge the important questions posed in this enjoyable narrative. Today's erotic fiction often deals directly with today's sexual behavior on a fantasy basis, but the reader will find this a realistic portrayal that probes sexual liberation within the family unit. Perhaps it will even provide important and meaningful insight into perplexing problems which plague so many of us today.
