A form of sexual behavior which has grown at a rather incredible rate over the past several decades involves what is known as Bondage and Discipline. Within the behavioral pattern there is a wide variation of practices, but all share a sadomasochistic base. In general, Bondage and Discipline involves relatively mild sadomasochism. This is the theme chosen by the author in NEIGHBORHOOD B & D PARTY, a novel which sets out to clearly illustrate the often innocent beginnings of what can become serious sexual deviation.
Psychologists report that many of the passive participants in practices involving Bondage and Discipline fall into two patterns: those who equate sex with sin in a confused version of Victorian morality and find themselves out of step in their contemporary society; and those who possess latent homosexual tendencies and use the behavior pattern as an outlet. Both of these patterns are illustrated in characters in this novel.
The author, however, appears to be more interested in calling attention to the jaded appetite syndrome of sexual sophistication. In a large number of the biographical accounts of couples who have entered the swinging world of sexual freedom we see references to a progression to more and more bizarre sexual practices. It would seem that the excitement of exercising sexual freedom fades after a period of time and many swingers drift into practices such as Bondage and Discipline in search of new thrills.
In this tale the author seems to echo the concern of many psychologists and sociologists today about the problem of personality disintegration often inherent in unbridled sexuality.
The final scene in this novel, which is meaningful only with all that has gone before, leaves one with an uneasy feeling. What has happened to Connie Merril, Wendy Costain, and even to their children? Are the heroes on the road to becoming villains? Where will they go from here? Perhaps this scene and these characters will cause each of us to look closely at ourselves.
