Foreword
The reason conventional morality has never worked in this country is simply that there is always some double standard. Men have a different standard than women. The rich ignore the law more than the poor. The churches absolve their own on one hand and condemn to damnation the rest of the world on the other hand. Like the government of the United States, morality is run by special interest groups.
This is being brought up because it is the crux of this novel. A young woman is plopped down into a job in a large department store surrounded by men and women of much greater sexual experience and cynicism than she. And it naturally follows that because she is desirable she will be pursued and, in the course of things, abused.
Society operates this way. People who understand the system misuse it in their favor at the disadvantage of the young and powerless.
There are only so many things actively pursued in life: Power, money and sex. People lie, cheat, steal and kill for these three things more than for any other single motive. It is not surprising, then, when the occurrences outlined in this manuscript take place. They are drawn not directly from life, but from the dark currents of emotion that impel individuals to power, money and sex.
Bear with the author, for he teaches the greatest lesson of all: that selfishness breeds deceit and the degradation of the individual.
