Foreword

Unfortunately, society preys on the helplessness of the innocent. And the elderly and the young are the most innocent we have: the elderly because they have little or no power and knowing that people with strength can do no more than bear inequity, they bear it; and children because they know neither their strength nor the weaknesses of the society which oppresses them.

Not to leave the impression that this is a grim novel of social strife. It is better to say it is a rather gay look at a childhood discovery of sex and sexuality set in the decadent stage of a social institution.

Orphanages or adoption agencies have long been noted for their abuses of their charges. Too often inadequately supervised, run by people who have their own particular perversions, be they money or sex, the orphanage has become the symbol for many of the degradation of young people.

This is hardly a truism that applies equally to every such agency. In fact, there are always steadfast places and people who hold the line, giving both love and care to their charges. But it is best to beware of the bad as well as the good. There is no changing evil unless one can see it and recognize it for what it is.
