Foreword

In war there are men who revert to being animals. Less than animals. Perhaps there is a lesson in that the truth that man's heritage is not all behind him, that man is still very much an animal.

The worst of this behavior is directed at women. Which is strange. Women don't make war. And yet it is the women who suffer the most in the hands of certain types of men.

More mysterious is the accord that seems to pass between victim and victor. The Jews were caged in Germany and destroyed by this same sort of sheepish acceptance of domination. It is almost as if the loser in this intensely emotional struggle surrenders everything to the victor, being himself no more than part of the pattern.

When the loss is intertwined with sex, then the surrender becomes even more intense so that it seems the loser may even derive pleasure from the ultimate and totally painful defeat...
