Introduction

Sexual experiences and conflict abound in this novel, just as they do in contemporary life, according to psychiatrists, sociologists and psychologists. For this reason, we believe the novel is both an instrument of entertainment and social learning, especially in the matter of the step-mother in this story.

Step-mothers have always occupied a unique place in literature and in life. Cybil, the step-mother character in this work, is even more unique. For one thing, she becomes involved in torrid sexual affairs with her step-son. By law, despite the fact that the two are not blood relatives, the affairs amount to incest. And incest is one of the most taboo areas of sexuality in America today. This alone creates conflict.

We mention, even stress, at times, the conflict between characters of a novel. There is a valid reason. Conflict is what creates plot and excitement in literature-it is what develops for you, the reader, an exciting reading experience.

It is dramatically present in this work.
