Chapter 10

Mary sat in her apartment and thought about what had happened in the bank vault. Lupe and Rufus had been arrested, of course, and were sure to spend a great deal of time in the state penitentiary. Mary had quit her job at the bank. She knew she could never go back there again, after what had happened. And yet, she thought, it hadn't been all bad. It had awakened something in her that she didn't know had existed. It had made her into the woman that she'd really always wanted to be.

She was moving to a different city where she was going to start a new life. The past was the past-but now she was a different person. A person who knew what pleasure life could offer and a person who had found what it was that was lacking in her life. And for that, she thanked Rufus.

But she had to hurry, she had little time for such thought. She had a date to get ready for. Clifford Freeman was due over in an hour. Mary smiled when she thought that they wouldn't even be going out.

She smiled even more when she thought of her date for the following night-Doris Lamp.
