It was all over as quickly as it had begun. When he received the ransom demand, Harper Lanier wasted no time in notifying the authorities. As it came out later, a suspicious guest at the motel tipped off the local police and that was that. Max Thompson and all of his associates were promptly arrested, and Barbara Lanier and her daughter Lila released.
When the Lanier family proved reluctant to prosecute because of Lila's tender age and the embarrassment that would result from a public trial, counsel for the defendants was able to plea bargain light sentences for the various culprits. Max's girl friend, Kathleen, was put on probation, and the men received the type of slap-on-the-wrist sentence usually reserved for erring politicians.
