Chapter 6

The two girls had made it to the safety of the shoreline.

"We've got to think this out," Tricia said as she tried to compose herself. We've got a few choices. One, we can stay here and wait. I don't know if that's really quite a good idea or not, since we have no guarantee that Ron and Don will come down here after us. Even if they did finally make it down here, they might not realize that the current carried us downstream. What we should try to do is make it back to where we parked the jeep, but we don't have a map or the compass, so we'd be certain to get lost."

"Well, what can we do?" Sally asked, as she felt the helplessness of her and Tricia's situation.

"We've got one chance," Tricia replied, sensing the worry in her friend's voice and trying to reassure the beautifully tan girl that everything would be all right. "If we make it to Pearson's Peak I think we'll be o.k. It's a popular backpacking spot. We're bound to run into someone."

"Yeah," Sally said, "isn't there a small, hidden ranger station around there someplace:"

"Yes," Tricia replied, "I think so, but I don't know exactly where. But at least we can see Pearson Peek from here, at least it's some place we can go to."

"You're right," Sally replied. "We've got to act fast and try to get there before it gets dark."

Wearily the two girls began hiking in the direction of the large and awesome Pearson Peak.
